How to compare furnace installation quotes in Ottawa

Use the same questions for each contractor so you can see what the price includes and what still needs clarification.

A useful furnace quote explains both the equipment and the work needed to install it in your home. Before choosing a proposal, bring the details into the same format and resolve any missing items in writing.

  1. 1. Start with your home, not just the old furnace

Tell each contractor about cold rooms, recent insulation or window upgrades, and any planned renovations. Ask how the recommended heating capacity was determined and whether a heat-loss assessment is included. If two proposals recommend different capacities, ask each contractor to explain the difference before comparing price.

  2. 2. Get the equipment details in writing

Ask for the manufacturer, exact model, heating capacity and rated efficiency, plus the proposed thermostat. Confirm whether the quote includes single-stage, two-stage or modulating equipment and ask what that choice means for your home. A brand name alone does not identify the system you are buying.

  3. 3. Compare the installation scope

Ask each contractor to list any ductwork, venting, drainage, gas or electrical changes included in the proposal. Check whether removal and disposal of the old unit, equipment start-up and final checks are included. Ask who handles any required permits or inspections and how unexpected work will be priced and approved.

  4. 4. Compare the complete cost

Request a written total showing equipment, labour, taxes and optional upgrades separately. Note exclusions, payment timing and how long the quote remains valid. If financing is offered, compare the total amount payable as well as the monthly payment. Ask for a price without assumed rebates so your comparison does not depend on an unconfirmed incentive.

  5. 5. Separate equipment and labour warranty terms

Ask for the written manufacturer warranty and the contractor’s labour coverage as separate items. Confirm registration requirements, maintenance conditions, exclusions and who to contact if a problem occurs. Ask whether diagnostic visits or labour would be charged when a part is covered. Do not assume the same coverage applies to every proposal.

  6. 6. Plan the installation and handover

For an Ottawa replacement during the heating season, discuss the expected time without heat and the plan if installation takes longer. Confirm access arrangements and the proposed schedule. Before signing, ask what documentation and operating instructions you will receive, and how follow-up questions or installation concerns will be handled.

Keep one comparison note for each quote

Record the model and capacity, sizing explanation, included work, exclusions, total including tax, warranty documents, payment terms and proposed schedule. Mark unanswered questions as “not confirmed” instead of treating them as included. Ask for an updated written proposal when the scope changes.
